• Recent Autism Diagnosis Statistics:
    •1 in 150 children in the United States are diagnosed.

    •1 in 81 children in Minnesota are diagnosed.

    •1 in 100 children in Fergus Falls were recently diagnosed.

    •There is no known cause of autism at this time.

    •The social/emotional age of an autistic student can be one-third to one-half of their chronological age.

    •The behaviors of autistic students are usually not a choice, they would prefer to comply.  If there is an unacceptable behavior, look for what the child is trying to communicate and first look at sensory issues.

    •Autism Spectrum Disorders can occur by themselves or in association with other neurological disorders such as developmentally delayed, attention deficit disorder, epilepsy, Tourette syndrome, obsessive compulsive disorder, and more.  It is important to distinguish differences in disabilities because if there is confusion, that may result in inappropriate or ineffective treatment.
