Assistive Technology
Assistive Technology
Assistive Technology (AT) includes any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially, off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities. Assistive Technology provides students' access to curriculum. Assistive Technology services can range from simple modifications to sophisticated, multipurpose devices. Examples include enlarged print, communication boards, microswitches, modified or alternate keyboards, and voice output aids.
What steps should you take to begin the process to explore appropriate Assistive Technology?
- Review student's IEP and any previous AT assessments/interventions
- Discuss concerns or questions related to AT that have not been addressed on the IEP with the Child Study Team
- Explore interventions and document the results
- Follow the district's team process
